About James

I have been a freelance film writer since 2007, having blogged on an amateur basis for a year prior. Whilst chiefly a film critic, I have also interviewed a whole range of film stars, directors and figures within the film industry.

My current positions are:

Radio Times: Film Critic

The Guardian: Contributor, Guardian Film.

CityAM: Film Critic.

BBC Radio Oxford: Film Critic, David Prever’s Drivetime.

LBC Radio: Film Analyst/guest, various shows.

BBC Berkshire & BBC 3 Counties Radio: Guest Critic/Analyst, various shows.

The National (UAE Newspaper): Contributor/Critic.

Close Up Magazine (www.closeupuk.com)- Film Editor.

The Deux-Sevre Monthly (France): Film Columnist

The Japan Times: Feature Writer

From January 2007 until April 2015 I was a film critic for website EntertainmentWise. In my time with the site, I had over 500 reviews published and interviewed stars such as Emily Watson, Nicole Kidman, Tom Cruise, Andy Serkis and Robert Pattinson.

From January 2007 to September 2013 I was the Film Editor for MPC Publications, a group of magazines with a combined 50,000 circulation in the North London area. My film section was syndicated amongst those magazines (which include “High Barnet Local”, “The Muswell Flyer” and “Camden Local”) every month until September 2013, when I decided to leave to concentrate on my other outlets. I left on good terms and oversaw the appointment of critic Jason Palmer, who took over the section.

In the past I have been the film critic for Oxford Journal and it’s sister papers Oxfordshire Guardian and Basingstoke Observer, writing a film review and interview section for their papers for two years until leaving in May 2013 to join the Oxford Mail and Times as a film columnist, a position I held until May 2014. Other papers I have written for include North London Paper The Archer, News International publication TheLondonPaper, and French newspaper Connexion France.

Other well-known publications I have written for include Clash Magazine, Fabric Magazine, and Lycos Entertainment .From March 2013-March2014 I helped devise and create the film section for The Fly Magazine, writing reviews, features and interviews for both the magazine’s website and print publication until it’s closure.

This website contains mostly my review work- for copyright reasons my interviews and the majority of my work for The National are not displayed, however all my work for the latter publication can be viewed here.

I have had a lifelong passion for cinema, and believe this enthusiasm is evident in my style of writing. I believe I write from the perspective of the cinema fan, but without alienating the casual cinema visitor. Cinema is no longer a cheap means of entertainment, making the role of the critic even more important.  My ‘heroes’ within the field of film criticism tend to be American critics such as the late Roger Ebert and ‘Rolling Stone’ writer Peter Travers.

I am always looking for new projects, either permanent or freelance, and if you should feel my work would be right for your publication then please feel free to contact me via the details below. I am also keen to expand into radio and TV/filmed work should the opportunity arise. Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the articles and thankyou again for visiting my site!
