About James

Hello! My name’s James (They/Them), and I first started as a film journalist in 2007. Starting out with regional publications , within a year I was writing for publications all over the world, providing reviews, interviews with major film stars and insight into the film industry.

Currently, I work as Film Editor for London newspaper City AM, Global Film and TV Editor for American Express Essentials, and a weekly critic for BBC Radio. I have written about movies for The Guardian, Radio Times, Reader’s Digest, Empire Magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, Little White Lies, BFI, NME, Metro UK, UAE newspaper The National, The Holland Times, and many more.I have also worked with UK cinema chains Vue, Reel CInemas, and Picturehouse.

I have made many TV appearances on a variety of networks across the world. In the UK, I have appeared on BBC News and BBC World news, as well as BBC One show Rip Off Britain discussing cinema prices. In 2021, I wrote and presented a short documentary for the BBC’s Inside Cinema series. Internationally, I have made appearances on Turkish news channel TRT World, Middle East network Al Araby TV, and Pakistan station Indus News.

Since 2012 I have been broadcasting across the BBC local radio network, appearing on a dozen stations (so far!) but most often BBC Oxford and BBC CWR. I provide weekly reviews, analysis of breaking stories, and interviews with actors. In 2015 I produced, researched, and presented my own documentary, Oxfordshire At The Movies. Outside of the BBC, I have made several contributions to network LBC News.

My work is well regarded in my industry, and in 2020 I was accepted into the prestigious UK Film Critics Circle. I have also been a member of GALECA, the society for LGBTQ+ Critics, since 2017. I have been on the awards juries for The Oxford International Film Festival, Midlands Movies Awards, Northeast International Film Festival, and the Critics Circle short film awards.

Outside of film I write about travel, primarily for City AM and Baltic Airlines’ Magazine, Baltic Outlook. I also write on LGBTQ+ issues both in film and society, having contributed to the book “Purple Prose: Bisexuality In Britain”, as well as speaking about my own experiences on radio and television.

I view myself as fiercely ambitious, and aim to continue writing about film at a national and international level, in all forms of media. I believe the work on this site demonstrates my knowledge and passion for film, something that I believe is essential for compelling, thoughtful content.

I am always looking for new commissions, so if you are looking for a film writer please look around this site and get in contact via the methods below.
